During this sailing, we did not get the chance to dine at any of the specialty restaurants. However, if you are someone who likes to elevate their dining experience, I would recommend trying out one of these venues during your sailing. This cruise was the longest in length that I have taken so far with Norwegian Cruise Line, and it was the perfect opportunity to test out one of the oldest ships in the fleet. We embarked on an exciting itinerary sailing around the United Kingdom and British Isles and had plenty of time to explore everything Norwegian Star has to offer its passengers.
Where does Norwegian Star sail from?
While the ship is over two decades old, the staterooms look and feel very comfortable, up-to-date, and modern. This was the most affordable stateroom category, and this is true for many other sailings across other cruise lines. They were $250 each and are good for a future deposit on a Norwegian cruise over the next four years. They gave me $250 in onboard credit on my current cruise for buying them.

On the other hand, we met a bartender called Rico who was a champion and made our time on the cruise an absolute pleasure. Rico worked with a bartender called Jeffrey in a duo who was also really lovely. O’Sheehans has a great pub menu and is worth visiting for their burgers, sandwiches and hot dogs. It is also the only place on the ship which serves Guinness beer which my husband and father appreciated.

I’ve always been artsy, so I gravitate toward these events easily. Once I bought my first piece of art (a Michael Godard onboard the Caribbean Princess) I was hooked. A Mediterranean cruise is something I’ve wanted to do for a while. I was so excited when the opportunity finally arose to travel with my family to Italy to start our cruise through the Mediterranean.

These shows are on repeat for a few months so if you do back to back cruising, you will likely need to see the same show twice. That being said, we really liked the production shows and were happy to see them a few times. There was a good show when we sailed called “What the World Needs” celebrating music of Burt Bacharach. The entertainment on the ship was of a really high quality overall.

Norwegian Star Staterooms
On the Dawn-class (which Star is part of) and the Gem-class, the forward balconies on Deck 8 are enclosed in metal unlike the majority of other balconies on the ship. Aside from that, the stateroom itself was in working order with a well-appointed closet and shelf space. The desk area with the TV had been updated during the refurbishment. Now there’s USB ports at the desk instead of a regular wall outlet.
Cruise Starts and Ends in Venice
For the past few years, Norwegian Cruise Line has been offering various types of their “Free at Sea” promotion. Depending on the stateroom category that you book, you will receive perks that include beverage packages, dining packages, free WiFi, shore excursion credits, and free or reduced airfare. Cagney’s, the steakhouse onboard, is the most popular specialty restaurant on the ship. However, you’ll want to book your reservations as soon as possible.
The staff at the restaurants were also generally really nice and helpful. We often ordered multiple meals and they were really kind and didn’t care how much we ordered or make us feel like pigs. I also ordered extra this or that like extra shrimp in one meal and they were happy to oblige.
What were the staterooms like onboard Norwegian Star?
It’s really hard to choose a favorite since every port was nothing short of amazing. From the old city in Kotor, the beaches in Greece, the streets of Mykonos, to enjoying a sunset dinner in Santorini, every day of the cruise was epic. I recently had the opportunity to take a seven night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line out of Venice, Italy. This cruise on Norwegian Star had been a bucket list trip for quite some time so I was excited to finally have the opportunity to take this cruise. Venice, Italy is another port where you can just hop off and walk around. I loved just wandering the charming streets, stopping in for pizza and wine along the way.
If we are traveling in a group, as we were on this cruise, we usually buy the beverage package as it is more economical if you are consuming a bit of grog. Norwegian often offers “Free at Sea” promos where they throw in the beverage package into the price of the cruise for a few hundred extra. There is also a beverage gratuity added if you decide to purchase the beverage package.
We booked a balcony stateroom, and it was teeny — smaller than most other balcony staterooms we have had on other cruise lines. The food on the Norwegian Star was overall of a very high quality. Oftentimes, older ships have a curtain for the shower door, but Norwegian Star has actual doors in the showers for all staterooms. The bathroom was a good size and featured plenty of counter space and shelves for guests to store their toiletries during their cruise. The other main dining restaurant onboard is Aqua, which has a moody atmosphere and gives guests the feeling of dining in a fancy modern dining establishment.
I would also avoid any rooms in close proximity (either next to or above) restaurants and bars due to noise. The Norwegian Star is an older ship and the cabins are really started to shown the age of the ship. The cabins are very clean and comfortable but they are showing signs of age like marks on the counter and yellow-ing of the walls. Norwegian helps you with your luggage when you leave the ship, which is a great service, but when I went to collect mine, someone had spilt some large drink on it which I didn’t appreciate. When I went to inform staff at the terminal, it was difficult to find anyone and no-one seemed to care much. I was very happy overall with the choice and quality of beverages onboard the Star.
